A Practical Guide to the CCP Exam from the Edwards CMMC Team

Preparing for the CCP Exam

The CMMC Certified Professional (CCP) exam carries weight. It is often the first formal step for professionals entering the CMMC ecosystem, and many candidates tell us that the most intimidating part is not the content itself but the unknowns. How do I schedule the exam? What happens the day of? How hard is it really? And what exactly is the exam looking for?

While the CMMC program continues to evolve, the CCP exam has one steady goal. It validates that you understand the essential concepts that support credible implementation and assessment work. At Edwards, we approach CCP training from that perspective. We are educators first, preparing you to pass the exam and preparing you for the work that comes after it. This guide distills the questions we hear most frequently and highlights what you can expect from the process.

Getting Ready to Schedule

Once you meet the Cyber AB requirements to sit for the exam, Edwards sends your candidate information to CAICO. Soon after, you will hear from Meazure Learning, the testing vendor. Their message explains how to set up your account and choose where to take the exam.

You can sit for the CCP exam on your own computer or at a testing center. Online testing offers flexibility, though it requires a quiet space and a dependable internet connection. A remote proctor will confirm your surroundings and may ask you to show the room again if noise occurs. Test centers offer a controlled environment, which many candidates find reassuring, and the equipment and connectivity are handled on site.

Your confirmation message includes details worth reviewing such as identification requirements, rules on personal items, exam security procedures, weather policies, and guidelines for accommodations. Understanding these expectations reduces stress on exam day and allows you to focus on content rather than logistics.

Inside the Exam

The CCP exam consists of 170 multiple choice questions over three and a half hours. The structure is consistent. You will see a brief situation, a question, and a set of possible answers. You can flag questions and return to them, which gives you room to think strategically.

Although the exam is described as foundational, it is not limited to Level 1 safeguards. You should be able to see how Level 1 practices support Level 2 requirements and why both matter within the broader protection of FCI and CUI. This does not require deep technical knowledge. It simply requires an understanding of how the pieces relate to one another.

To make preparation manageable, many candidates focus on three core tasks. Here is the approach our instructors recommend:

  1. Review the Blueprint and CAP with an eye toward concepts rather than memorization
  2. Refresh your CUI knowledge by completing the DoD CUI training shortly before your exam
  3. Study broadly, using the full set of course materials provided by Edwards

These steps reinforce terminology, help you understand how CMMC fits together, and support recall during the exam. Some questions may appear similar or familiar. This is a feature of the exam, not a flaw. Repetition helps confirm depth of understanding. Treat each question on its own terms, even if it feels related to an earlier one.

Submitting and Receiving Results

Once you answer the final question, the system prompts you to submit your work. If anything is left unanswered or flagged, you can review it before completing the exam. A short optional survey may appear at the end. It offers space to comment on specific questions, though participation is not required.

Results are displayed immediately. An email will follow with official confirmation.

If you pass, you will receive instructions for beginning Tier 3 and completing the Delta Training and Test. This requirement uses an open book format, includes a one-hundred-dollar fee, and relies on PowerPoint based materials.

If you do not pass, you may retake the exam after a thirty day wait. The CCP exam draws from a large question bank, so reviewing only the areas you remember is rarely effective. Candidates who succeed on their second attempt usually approach their preparation as if it were their first. They revisit the fundamentals, reread the Blueprint, review instructor materials, and allow themselves to relearn the full landscape of CMMC.

“The goal of the CCP exam is to confirm foundational understanding. When candidates know what to expect, they can focus on demonstrating what they have learned rather than worrying about the process itself.” – Rick Hein, CMMC Instructor, Edwards Performance Solutions

Final Recommendations from the CMMC Team

Many candidates tell us that the best thing they did was schedule the exam soon after training. The material is clearest when it is fresh. Your discussions from class are easier to recall. The logic behind Level 1 and Level 2 feels more intuitive. To make the most of your preparation, consider the following.

  • Give yourself a realistic study window and avoid cramming
  • Use the CUI training as a warmup for the terminology and scope thinking required
  • Keep the Edwards course materials close, they were designed with the exam in mind
  • Remember that the CCP exam is only one part of your journey
  • The knowledge you build now supports meaningful work with organizations preparing for CMMC assessments.
